Best 6 Experiences in Atlantic Canada

2023-01-26

Canada has so much to offer from beautiful spots in Alberta to vibrant Vancouver, to beautiful spots in Ontario. However, one area of Canada is often overlooked in comparison to its more well-known spots, and that's Atlantic Canada. As you know, there are a lot of things to do on the east coast of Canada, especially in Atlantic Canada but also there are many such unexpected circumstances that occur that are out of our minds. To cover such expenses it is best to have travel Insurance coverage.

We thought it would be useful to share some of our favourite places to explore while you're on the east coast of Canada. After all, it's still a vast area, so you'd need months (if not years) to even scratch the surface.

Here are some of the spots we explored during our recent trips to Canada:

  • See humpbacks

Get yourself over to Gatherall's Puffin & Whale Watch which departs on most days and is located at Bay Bulls around an hour from St. John's if you'd like to see some wildlife off the east coast of Canada.

It's said to be one of the best whale-watching areas in North America if you're lucky enough to see some of the half-a-million puffins and humpback whales that call this area home.

  • Explore St John’s

One of the best things to do in Atlantic Canada is explore St John's (in Newfoundland and Labrador). This is especially true if you're looking to experience a slower-paced Canadian city.

Visit Signal Hill, Cape Spear, and see the Jellybean Row Houses. These are pretty, colorful houses that line the street in St. John's.

Then, head over to Quidi Vidi and have lunch at the Mallard Cottage. Be sure to book in advance, though, as this spot fills up quickly.

  • Hopewell Rocks

Wandering around Hopewell Rocks (around Lower Cape) is easily one of the best things to do in Atlantic Canada for something completely different.

Due to tidal erosion from the Bay of Fundy, the rocks form some pretty dramatic coastal formations.

The whole east coast of Canada has a stunning coastline, with Hopewell Rocks being one of the most iconic. Make sure to visit during low tide so you can walk on the beach itself.

  • Explore Lunenburg

Finding Lunenburg was one of the best things I did in Atlantic Canada; and not just because of its food!

With all the colourful and historic houses that line the streets, it almost looks like you've stepped back in time to the 1950s.

Exploring the little streets filled with independent shops and cafes after lunch at The Fish Shack, are worth it.

  • Kayak the Bay of Fundy

There are a few beaches just down the road from Hopewell Rocks where you can kayak through the Bay of Fundy and see the coastline from an entirely new perspective.

As we left, my arms were like jelly! You need some power behind you to get over some of those currents.

Always go out with trained professionals and experts if you plan on doing this.

  • Peggy’s Cove

In my opinion, Peggy's Cove is one of the most famous places along the east coast of Canada.

Visit the iconic Peggy's Point Lighthouse, stop at The Buoy Shop for a few gifts, and have a tasty treat at Dee Dee's Ice Cream, situated south of Halifax.

This is one of the best things to do in Atlantic Canada.
